This may seem odd, but I would like your honest oppinions on editing suites, software, accessories, cameras, mics etc etc. Y'see, our college has just gained Specialist Media College status, and has recieved a grant of ?560,000 over the next 3 years. It's been rumoured that we are recieving ?10,000 next week (9th October 2000)and we have no specifics of what to spend it on! We currently have 35 year old equipment donated to us sometime, which doesn't work, and some dodgy Panasonics VHS-C cams. Obviously we'd like to get some kit that will be very simple to use for all years of the college, but something that can offer pro editing techniques too. Any suggestions will be most appreiciated.

P.S - Catch us on the Oxford Regional news on BBC One sometime soon (They didn't tell us when!)

    Hi there
The college I attend has some of the best equipment and tries to keep up to date so heres what you really need.

Cameras - 2 manufacturers are battling it out ( panasonic DVC-Pro or Sony Digi-Beta ) Our college opted for the DVC-Pro. ( check the panasonic web site for specs as there are a number of models . Ours came in at $15000 ( ?7500)for each camera

    Transfer machines-- Dvc-Pro vcrs / s-vhs vcrs
Editing : On-line/off-line AVID non linear editing suite ( off-line will be cheaper ) Some 2 machine S-VHS suites (cheap off-line linear editers for cuts only)
some 3 machine S-VHS suites ( cheap off-line linear editers fo transitions and cuts )
    Optima non-linear edit suits
sound suite - G4 mac with Pro-tools (preferable with over dubbing booth )
cd machines and 24 track mixing desk
    library of sound effects disks.
This is a brief list bearing in mind the final ?560,000.
All the above equipment would suffice for single camera filming. If your college would like details of a studio based multi-camera setup then drop me a line.

Casablanca Avio Nonlinear Editing System www.draco.com
It is only $1500 plus tax. The easiest, fastest, cheapest editing machine that can hold a feature lenght film or help you make a video. Buy one at least or a bunch if you are smart.
